We are devastated by the silent removal of a memorial plaque remembering Palestinians killed by an Israeli airstrike on the Church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City; removed without warning, less than a week after it was laid.
The plaque was respectfully unveiled and blessed during a prayer vigil in Auckland last Saturday, remembering the eighteen martyrs one year on, and creating space to grieve for those in Aotearoa who’ve lost loved ones in Gaza;
“I cannot thank you enough… This is one of the most honouring acts of allyship. We are unable to bury our loved ones, so you’ve lifted some of that heaviness by placing this permanent memorial in our honour. Thank you.”
AC4PP heard a complaint was laid for council remove the plaque, and despite requesting further dialogue before any action was taken, we found it had been removed on Thursday.
We acknowledge the conventional procedure wasn’t followed, but the manner of its removal prioritising process above goodwill displays a profound lack of respect and reinforces a culture where Palestinian grief and experiences hold little value.
‘Incorrect process’ was cited to remove the plaque, but the complaints stem from a culture where Palestinian existence is seen as wholly political rather than inherently human. The memorial wasn’t offensive, dangerous, or obtrusive – it was a simple and beautiful recognition of Palestinian humanity; and the callous manner of its removal by council was an utter disgrace.
We are disappointed this has been dealt with in such a dishonouring and undignified way, and we call on Auckland Council to reinstate the plaque or return it to be laid in a place where it will be respected God willing.
We also continue calls for Erica Stanford to grant lifesaving visas to families still trapped in Gaza.
