PRESS RELEASE: Clergy prayerfully conclude nonviolent lock-on at Minister Nicola Willis’ office

After 32 hours chained in prayer outside Minister Nicola Willis’ electoral office, we are concluding our nonviolent lock-on tonight. We leave with our message ringing louder than ever: further sanctions on Israel are an urgent step New Zealand must take.

We have seen an incredible outpouring of support for this message from people of all faiths and walks of life.  In these 32 hours, dozens of people have been killed in Gaza and the New Zealand government has done nothing to respond, and has refused meetings with faith leaders and the Kiwi-Palestinian community.

Travel bans on two Israeli government ministers, and 33 West Bank settlers, are not enough. On Russia, New Zealand has shown real moral leadership by imposing sanctions on 1800 individuals and military entities, and imposing a 35% tariff on all Russian imports.  It is clear that New Zealand can do more to pressure Israel, and we call on the government to impose meaningful sanctions without delay.

We have seen that tens of thousands of New Zealanders support sanctions on Israel. We invite all people to join us in continuing this call, taking action in the spirit of nonviolence. https://our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/nz-government-sanction-israel-now
